Ridesharing is a concept that is widely accepted across the planet. The goal of ridesharing is to decrease the amount of traffic congestion, vehicle trips, and emissions from vehicles. More often than not, a person needs a smartphone app in order to use this type of transportation service that involves a privately owned vehicle.  The concept has been around for years, but it is only in recent years when it boomed due to the introduction of mobile apps. During World War II, the world experienced a fuel shortage. People resorted to sharing their rides to get from one place to another. It also became popular in the 1970s when the world suffered from an energy and oil crisis.  At present, ridesharing means hailing privately owned cars with the use of a mobile app. It is said to be more convenient than riding a taxi or any other public transport. The app allows users to track the location of the driver, get notifications when the ride is arriving, and contact the driver when needed. More commuters prefer ridesharing over taxis that the latter are complaining about reduced passengers.  However, transport experts agree that ridesharing services are complimentary to the traditional public transportation options such as buses, taxis, and trains. And with its popularity, it is safe to say that ridesharing will be here to stay for a long time.

Top Ridesharing Companies

At present, there are two top ridesharing companies. These are Lyft and Uber. While Uber remains as the top dog in the industry, Lyft is a close second.  Uber has dominated the industry since it was established in 2009, with its headquarters located in San Francisco, California. Aside from the United States, it offers its ridesharing services in more than 60 countries across the planet. Because of its success, companies from other industries are trying to replicate Uber’s business model of sharing. One example is Airbnb, which is said to be the Uber for houses. Lyft’s services are similar to that to Uber. It also has a mobile app that serves as a bridge between commuters and private cars signed up with the company. To distinguish its fleet from other ridesharing services, the cars feature a pink mustache on the dashboard.  The emergence of ridesharing services has allowed commuters to save on gas and maintenance of their own car. It also provides drivers a way to earn extra income. And as more people learn about what is ridesharing, it helps conserve non-renewable sources of energy and reduce the amount of emissions in the air.
